Photographic Archive
With the support of four-year Heritage Lottery funding awarded in January 2008, Autograph ABP is developing the Archive and Research Centre for Culturally Diverse Photography, the UK’s first permanent public print collection and digital resource dedicated to the preservation and promotion of culturally diverse photography.
The establishment of the Archive builds on 20 years of work that has addressed a lack ofrepresentation of photographers from culturally diverse backgrounds. As a digital image bank and research resource, the Archive will highlight a missing chapter in the UK’s cultural history. As such, it will enable us to engage with a wider public, reach new audiences, and work in partnership with educational and cultural institutions to create a lasting legacy of this significant era in Britain’s history. With a dedicated curatorial and outreach programme (including a series of nationwide Photography Roadshows), the Archive development enhances Autograph ABP’s existing collection of artists’ commissions with the addition of newly curated portfolios, vernacular photographs and donated works.
A modern collection of historical photographs, the images in the Archive range in genre from constructed high street studio portraits and family snapshots to social documentary and fine art photography. Through a programme of preserving, cataloguing and digitising, they will form part of an online learning resource and picture library featuring a range of interpretative materials (our new website and digital image bank will be online by early 2011).
